This is the last fishing report for trout fishing in alpine rivers and streams for the 2008/09 season. It is quite brief this week and a bit late, but no matter. Four lakes in the area will still be available although some are inaccessible due to deep snow drifts in winter. Right now all the rivers and streams are producing good numbers of trout and should continue to do so right up to the season’s close at midnight on Monday 8th June.
Bogong High Plains: Rocky Valley and Pretty Valley lakes are about 60% full and fishing extremely well at the moment with bait and lure anglers taking numbers of well-proportioned rainbow trout to 600 grams on average from around the shoreline. The creeks feeding the lakes are also full of brown and rainbow trout to 1.5-2.0 kilograms and larger as they move up to their spawning grounds.
Bogong High Plains: The inflow creeks to Rocky Valley Lake and the inflow creek to Pretty Valley Lake are absolutely full of brown trout to 1.5 kilograms this week as they move upstream to their spawning grounds. They are proving hard to catch in shallow clear water but the effort can be very rewarding. They are taking drifted worms, small lures with lots of red and glow bug flies and size 14 weighted black nymphs.
Bogong Village: The two inflow streams to Lake Guy are fishing extremely well at the moment so I expect that the lake will fish reasonably well throughout winter, especially as fish return after spawning.
Mt Beauty Pondage: The pondage at Mt Beauty is half full and fishing reasonably well this week, according to reports. The most popular spots for lure and bait fishing are along the high bank on the northern side and around the reeds in fairly shallow water just off the access road, near the outflow. The latter should be tried around dusk when large rainbow trout are often feeding among the reeds.
Lake Catani: Lake Catani at Mt Buffalo is 100% full and fishing reasonably well this week, as trout to 500 grams on average respond easily to Tassie devils lures and bunches of earthworms, either drifted or presented under a bubble float. This lake fishes well in winter. It will be surrounded by light snow in a few weeks but can be accessed all winter by determined anglers.

Fly Fishing Tuition: Right now is a great time to contact Geoff at Angling Expeditions Victoria, who is located at Tawonga in the heart of northeast Victoria’s alpine region, to learn the basics of fly fishing for wild trout.
Angling Expeditions Victoria provides all the fishing gear free and teaches you everything about fly fishing. Would like to be able to cast a delicate dry fly with absolute ease and precision and catch that big one? (Like the four people mentioned in this report.)
If so, phone Geoff on (03) 5754 1466 or email info@anglingvic.com.au and you could be catching wild-bred trout like those people did last weekend.
See website www.anglingvic.com.au for more details of services provided. Also check out photos of waters most recently fished and read and possibly add to comments on blog attached to the website.
